John de Harington

John de Harington attended king Edward I in his expedition to Scotland 1305, and was made a knight of the Bath at the same time with the Prince of Wales, afterwards king Edward II. He was summoned to Parliament from 18 Edw II to 21 Edw II 1347, when he died. He m Juliana da of sir Richard Barlingham, knt., and had besides other issue a son and heir apparent sir Robert who died in his lifetime having m Elizabeth sister and co heir of John de Moulton lord of Egremont a baron of parliament and leaving issue by her

2 Robert ancestor of the present Baron of whom hereafter

John 2d lord Harington was summoned to parliament 1348 and died 1363 leaving a son and heir Robert 3d lord who d 1405 leaving 2 sons, 1 Robert and 2 John 4th and 5th lords which last died 1457 leaving an only daughter Elizabeth wife of William lord Bonville.

Sir Robert de Harington younger brother of the 2d lord and ancestor of the present bart and of the lords Harington of Exton extinct was seated at Flete co Lincoln m Mary da of Kirkby and left one son

John m Agnes da of Laurence Flete of Flete co Lincoln and d 1421 was succeeded by his son

Robert m the da and co h of John de la Laund and left a son John m Katharine da and co h of sir Thomas Colepepper of Exton co Rutland knt and was succeeded by his son

Robert high sheriff co Rutland 1492 and 1498 and d 12 Feb 1501 He m Maud da of sir John Prisett knt chief justice of the common pleas and left a son

Sir John Harington of Exton aforesaid knt aged 30 at his father’s death he was high sheriff co Rutland 1503 1512 1516 and 1521 d 5 Nov 1524 buried at Exton m Alice da of Henry Southill of in Lincolnshire. He was succeeded by his eldest son

Sir John Harington of Exton knt high sheriff co Rutland 1520 1533 1540 and 1552 and treasurer of the army at Boulogne to king Henry VIII d 1 May 1554 he m Elizabeth da and h of Robert Moton of Peckleton co Leicester and was succeeded by his eldest son

Sir James Harington knt high sheriff co Rutland the latter part of 6th of Edward VI and again the 3d 8th 20th and 28th of Elizabeth m Lucy da of sir William Sidney of Penshurst co Kent knt and sister of sir Henry Sidney KG and aunt of sir Philip Sidney and 1592 having had issue by her who d 1590 3 sons

1 John created 21 July 1603 baron Harrington of Exton co Rutland He was entrusted with the tuition of the princess Elizabeth da of king James I till her marriage with Frederick count palatine of the Rhine and d on his return from the electoral court at Worms in Germany 24 Aug 1613 aged 73 leaving

2 Sir Henry m Cecilia da and co h of Francis Agard and had issue

I Sir JAMES of Ridlington co Rutland and high sheriff of the co 35th of Elizabeth He was created a bart 29 June 1611 upon the first institution of this order and m Frances da and co h of Robert Sapcote of Elton co Bedford esq by whom he had 3 sons

  • 2 Sir Sapcote knt m 1st Jane da of sir William Samwell of Upton co Northampton knt one of the auditors of James 1 by whom he had 1 James Harington his eldest son groom of the chambers to Charles I and author of the Oceana d without issue 1677 Sir Sapcote’s 2d wife was Jane da of sir John Woodward knt by whom he had several children.
  • 3 John m Frances da of Terringham Norwood of Astwood co Bucks

Sir James died 2 Feb 1613 and was succeeded by his eldest son

II Sir EDWARD received the honour of knighthood in his father’s lifetime was high sheriff co Rutland 19 James I and 12 Charles I and m Margery da and co h of John Doyley of Merton co Oxon esq with whom he had that seat and estate and by whom he had issue several das and 1 son

III Sir JAMES who sat in judgement upon his sovereign and was consequently 13 Car II attainted degraded and rendered incapable of bearing arms or title of dignity hem Katharine da and co h of sir Edmund Wright knt lord mayor of London by whom he had a numerous issue and was succeeded by his eldest son

IV Sir EDMUND twice m but d without issue and was succeeded by his great nephew

V Sir EDWARD who also d without issue and was succeeded by his great nephew
